Luckily the Salt Lake Valley, immediately surrounding Salt Lake City, Utah, is fast establishing itself as an internationally-renowned destination for outdoor recreation. It doesn't matter if you're planning a vacation to this beautiful valley or are a long time resident, there is something out there for you.

6) Bingham Canyon Copper Mine

Currently owned and operated by the Kennecott Company, the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine is among the largest open-air mines in the world. It descends nearly ¾ of a mile; in its history miners have extracted more than 16 million tons of copper. It's also visible from space! Check out the mine's visitor's center for a number of fascinating exhibits on this eye-opening Utah landmark, just west of Herriman and the Daybreak community.

5) Red Butte Garden & Arboretum

Located on the east side of Salt Lake City near the University of Utah campus toward Lookout Peak. This beautiful landmark boast a picturesque walking trail into the mountain, amid a gorgeous meadow of flowers. The facility is also host to an open-air concert series in the summertime featuring some big name acts!

South of Salt Lake City and just east of Spanish Fork, a 2.5 mile hike from the parking area will take you the calm, invigorating waters of Fifth Water Hot Springs.

Located in Diamond Fork Canyon, a series of natural spring pools vary in temperature and there is even a waterfall!



3) Sailing on the Great Salt Lake

Not a great place for swimming but the Great Salt Lake is renowned for its outstanding sunsets. Sailing charters are a great way to experience the expansive lake and its ideal for all skill levels. Many charters disembark from the Great Salt Lake Marina, west of Salt Lake City and West Valley City off I80.

2) Antelope Island

Like taking a trip back in time, Antelope Island, just west ofFarmington is essentially devoid of any infrastructure. Many hiking and biking trails allow visitors to take in the sights and sounds fully. You may encounter any number of the indigenous species including wild coyotes, pronghorn, elk, waterfowl and even bison.
